BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) is characterized by the enlargement and weakening of the heart and is a major cause of heart failure in children. Infection and nutritional deficiencies are culprits for DCMP. Zinc is an important nutrient for human health due to its anti-oxidant effect that protects cell against oxidative damage. This case-control study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary intake of zinc and selenium and the risk of DCMP in pediatric patients. METHODS: A total of 36 DCMP patients and 72 matched controls were recruited, and their dietary intakes were assessed via a validated food frequency questionnaire. We used chi-square and sample T-test for qualitative and quantitative variables, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was applied to assess the relationship between selenium and zinc intake with the risk of DCMP. RESULTS: After fully adjusting for confounding factors, analyses showed that selenium (OR = 0.19, CI = 0.057-0.069, P trend < 0.011) and zinc (OR = 0.12, CI = 0.035-0.046, P trend < 0.002) intake were strongly associated with 81% and 88% lower risk of pediatric DCMP, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the protective role of adequate dietary intake of selenium and zinc in decreasing the risk of DCMP in children. Malnutrition may exacerbate the condition and addressing these micronutrient deficiencies may improve the cardiac function. Further studies are recommended to detect the underlying mechanisms and dietary recommendations for DCMP prevention.

Trace elements are important for human health but may exert toxic or adverse effects. Mechanisms of uptake, distribution, metabolism, and excretion are partly under genetic control but have not yet been extensively mapped. Here we report a comprehensive multi-element genome-wide association study of 57 essential and non-essential trace elements. We perform genome-wide association meta-analyses of 14 trace elements in up to 6564 Scandinavian whole blood samples, and genome-wide association studies of 43 trace elements in up to 2819 samples measured only in the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT). We identify 11 novel genetic loci associated with blood concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, manganese, selenium, and zinc in genome-wide association meta-analyses. In HUNT, several genome-wide significant loci are also indicated for other trace elements. Using two-sample Mendelian randomization, we find several indications of weak to moderate effects on health outcomes, the most precise being a weak harmful effect of increased zinc on prostate cancer. However, independent validation is needed. Our current understanding of trace element-associated genetic variants may help establish consequences of trace elements on human health.

The study aimed to explore the association between five heavy metals exposure (Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Manganese, and Selenium) and mortality [all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer-related]. We integrated the data into the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2018 years. A total of 16,092 participants were recruited. The link between heavy metals exposure and mortality was analyzed by constructing a restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve, Cox proportional hazard regression model, and subgroup analysis. The RCS curve was used to show a positive linear relationship between Cadmium, Lead, and all-cause mortality. In contrast, there was a negative linear correlation between Mercury and all-cause mortality. Additionally, Manganese and Selenium also had a J-shaped and L-shaped link with all-cause mortality. The positive linear, positive linear, negative liner, J-shaped, and L-shaped relationships were observed for Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Manganese, and Selenium and CVD mortality, respectively. Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, and Selenium were observed to exhibit positive linear, U-shaped, negative linear, and L-shaped relationships with cancer-related mortality, respectively. There was an increase and then a decrease in the link between Manganese and cancer-related morality. This study revealed the correlation between the content of different elements and different types of mortality in the U.S. general population.

Keshan disease (KD) is a type of endemic cardiomyopathy with an unknown cause. It is primarily found in areas in China with low selenium levels, from northeast to southwest. The nutritional biogeochemical etiology hypothesis suggests that selenium deficiency is a major factor in KD development. Selenium is important in removing free radicals and protecting cells and tissues from peroxide-induced damage. Thus, low environmental selenium may affect the selenium level within the human body, and selenium level differences are commonly observed between healthy people in KD and nonKD areas. From the 1970s to the 1990s, China successfully reduced KD incidence in endemic KD areas through a selenium supplementation program. After years of implementing prevention and control measures, the selenium level of the population in the KD areas has gradually increased, and the prevalence of KD in China has remained low and stable in recent years. Currently, the pathogenesis of KD remains vague, and the effect of selenium supplementation on the prognosis of KD still needs further study. This paper comprehensively reviews selenium deficiency and its connection to KD. Thus, this study aims to offer novel ideas and directions to effectively prevent and treat KD in light of the current situation.

This study aims to explore the concentrations of Se and Hg in shellfish along the Gulf of Mannar (GoM) coast (Southeast India) and to estimate related risks and risk-based consumption limits for children, pregnant women, and adults. Se concentrations in shrimp, crab, and cephalopods ranged from 0.256 to 0.275 mg kg-1, 0.182 to 0.553 mg kg-1, and 0.176 to 0.255 mg kg-1, respectively, whereas Hg concentrations differed from 0.009 to 0.014 mg kg-1, 0.022 to 0.042 mg kg-1 and 0.011 to 0.024 mg kg-1, respectively. Se and Hg content in bamboo shark (C. griseum) was 0.242 mg kg-1 and 0.082 mg kg-1, respectively. The lowest and highest Se concentrations were found in C. indicus (0.176 mg kg-1) and C. natator (0.553 mg kg-1), while Hg was found high in C. griseum (0.082 mg kg-1) and low in P. vannamei (0.009 mg kg-1). Se shellfishes were found in the following order: crabs > shrimp > shark > cephalopods, while that of Hg were shark > crabs > cephalopods > shrimp. Se in shellfish was negatively correlated with trophic level (TL) and size (length and weight), whereas Hg was positively correlated with TL and size. Hg concentrations in shellfish were below the maximum residual limits (MRL) of 0.5 mg kg-1 for crustaceans and cephalopods set by FSSAI, 0.5 mg kg-1 for crustaceans and 1.0 mg kg-1 for cephalopods and sharks prescribed by the European Commission (EC/1881/2006). Se risk-benefit analysis, the AI (actual intake):RDI (recommended daily intake) ratio was > 100%, and the AI:UL (upper limit) ratio was < 100%, indicating that all shellfish have sufficient level of Se to meet daily requirements without exceeding the upper limit (UL). The target hazard quotient (THQ < 1) and hazard index (HI < 1) imply that the consumption of shellfish has no non-carcinogenic health impacts for all age groups. However, despite variations among the examined shellfish, it was consistently observed that they all exhibited a Se:Hg molar ratio > 1. This finding implies that the consumption of shellfish is generally safe in terms of Hg content. The health benefit indexes, Se-HBV and HBVse, consistently showed high positive values across all shellfish, further supporting the protective influence of Se against Hg toxicity and reinforcing the overall safety of shellfish consumption. Enhancing comprehension of food safety analysis, it is crucial to recognize that the elevated Se:Hg ratio in shellfish may be attributed to regular selenoprotein synthesis and the mitigation of Hg toxicity by substituting Se bound to Hg.

In this study, egg yolk selenium peptides (Se-EYP) were prepared using double-enzyme hydrolysis combined with a shearing pretreatment. The properties of the selenopeptides formed were then characterized, including their yield, composition, molecular weight distribution, antioxidant activity, in vitro digestion, and immunomodulatory activity. The peptide yield obtained after enzymatic hydrolysis using a combination of alkaline protease and neutral protease was 74.5%, of which 82.6% had a molecular weight <1000 Da. The selenium content of the lyophilized solid product was 4.01 µg/g. Chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that 88.6% of selenium in Se-EYP was in the organic form, of which SeMet accounted for 60.3%, SeCys2 for 21.8%, and MeSeCys for 17.9%. After being exposed to in vitro simulated digestion, Se-EYP still had 65.1% of oligopeptides present, and the in vitro antioxidant activity was enhanced. Moreover, Se-EYP exhibited superior immune detection indices, including immune organ index, level of immune factors in the serum, histopathological changes in the spleen, and selenium content in the liver. Our results suggest that Se-EYP may be used as selenium-enriched ingredients in functional food products.

The monitoring of essential and toxic elements in patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) undergoing methadone treatment (MT) is important, and there is limited previous research on the urinary levels of these elements in MT patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze certain elements in the context of methadone treatment compared to a healthy group. In this study, patients with opioid use disorder undergoing MT (n = 67) were compared with a healthy group of companions (n = 62) in terms of urinary concentrations of some essential elements (selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca)) and toxic elements (lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and chromium (Cr)). Urine samples were prepared using the acid digestion method with a mixture of nitric acid and perchloric acid and assessed using the ICP-MS method. Our results showed that the two groups had no significant differences in terms of gender, education level, occupation, and smoking status. Urinary concentrations of Se, Cu, and Fe levels were significantly lower in the MT group compared to the healthy subjects. However, the concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, Mn, Cr, and Ca in the MT group were higher than in the healthy group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was established between the levels of Zn in the two groups (p = 0.232). The results of regression analysis revealed that the differences between the concentration levels of all metals (except Zn) between two groups were still remained significant after adjusting for all variables (p < 0.05). The data obtained in the current study showed lower urinary concentrations of some essential elements and higher levels of some toxic elements in the MT group compared to the healthy subjects. These findings should be incorporated into harm-reduction interventions.

This paper presents the results of the research on the overall distribution of selenium (Se) in various aquatic compartments (water, sediment, plankton and macrophytes) at six selected sites of the Croatian part of the Drava and Danube rivers, the connected floodplain lake and the melioration channel system carried out in two sampling periods (flooding in June and the drought period in September). In addition, the physicochemical water properties, plankton composition and biomass were analysed. Our study revealed low mean Se contents in sediments and water, indicating Se deficiency in the studied freshwater systems. The physicochemical environment, including Se distribution, was primarily influenced by hydrology rather than site-specific biogeochemical and morphological characteristics. The flooding period was characterised by higher Se content in water and higher transparency, nitrate and total nitrogen concentrations than drought conditions. At the river sites, sediment Se content was the highest during the flood period, while at all other sites, higher concentrations were found during the drought, reaching the maximum in the lake. Although Se concentrations were below the threshold for aquatic ecotoxicity, they increased in the following order: water (0.021-0.187 µg Se L-1) < sediments (0.005-0.352 mg Se kg-1) < macrophytes (0.010-0.413 mg Se kg-1) < plankton (0.044-0.518 mg Se kg-1) indicating its possible biomagnification at the bottom of the food chain. Species known for high Se accumulation potential dominated the biomass of the main plankton groups and the composition of the macrophyte community, which may provide a more sensitive and accurate steady-state compartment monitor for Se assessment in freshwater biotopes.

Metals continue to impose health issues among world populations. A non-invasive alternative biomarker for assessment of metals and other elements has been explored in other studies using toenail samples. Some benefits of using toenails as biomarkers over blood samples include cost efficiency, ease of collection, and a longer biological half-life within samples. The objective of this study was to employ desktop XRF for the purpose of measuring metal concentrations in human nail samples, thus conducting a non-destructive assessment. These benefits paired with comparable accuracy in exposure detection could prove toenail samples to be a preferred biomarker for many studies. Current elemental quantification techniques in toenail samples could be improved. The standard practice for measuring metal exposure in toenails, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), has a counterpart in x-ray fluorescence. While maintaining similar quantification capabilities, x-ray fluorescence could provide decreased cost, preservation of samples, and ease of operation. Portable XRF machines have been tested for measuring toenail samples, but they have drastically increased detection limits in comparison to ICP-MS. New benchtop XRF systems should give comparable detection limits to ICP-MS. This study compares the benchtop XRF measurements of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and Selenium (Se) levels to that of ICP-MS measurements of toenail samples and calculates estimated detection limits for 23 other elements. We found strong correlations for the toenail lead (R2 = 0.92), copper (R2 = 0.95), selenium (R2 = 0.60), and iron (R2 = 0.77) comparison between desktop XRF and ICP-MS measurements. Median minimum detection limits over the 23 elements were found to be 0.2 µg/g using a 7.5-min measurement. Benchtop XRF provides a lower detection limit than previously studied portable XRF machines, which gives it the capability of accurately detecting almost any desired element in nail samples. Benchtop XRF provides a non-destructive alternative to ICP-MS in surveillance of nail samples.

The present study analyzed the content of total mercury (THg) and selenium (Se) in the muscle of shrimp collected from local markets in the 11 Pacific coastal states of Mexico. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentration, Se:Hg ratio, health benefits value from selenium consumption (HBVSe) and the permissible weekly consumption were estimated to assess the health risk to consumers. All THg and Se concentrations were below the maximum permissible limits. All hazard quotient (HQ) values were <1, however in Hermosillo, Culiacán and Guadalajara, the Se:Hg ratio and HBVSe were <1 and negative, due to the low concentrations of Se. As a general conclusion, there is no risk nor benefit from the consumption of shrimp from the Pacific coast of Mexico due to its Hg and Se content.

This study aimed to explore the concentrations of Se and Hg in marine fish along the Gulf of Mannar (southeast coast of India) and to assess related risks and risk-based consumption limits for children, pregnant women, and adults. Se concentrations in pelagic and benthic fish ranged from 0.278 to 0.470 mg/kg and 0.203 to 0.294 mg/kg, respectively, whereas Hg concentrations ranged from 0.028 to 0.106 mg/kg and 0.026 to 0.097 mg/kg, respectively. Se and Hg contents in demersal fish (Nemipterus japonicus) were 0.282 and 0.039 mg/kg, respectively. The lowest and highest Hg concentrations in pelagic fish were found in Scomberomorus commersoni and Euthynnus affinis whereas the lowest and highest Se concentrations in benthic fish were found in Scarus ghobban and Siganus javus. Se concentrations in marine fishes were found in the following order: pelagic > demersal > benthic whereas Hg concentrations were found in the following order: pelagic > benthic > demersal. The presence of Se in fish was positively correlated with trophic level (TL) and size whereas that of Hg was weakly correlated with TL and habitat and negatively correlated with size. Se risk-benefit analysis, the AI/RDI (actual intake/recommended daily intake) ratio was > 100 % and the AI/UL (upper limit) ratio was < 100 %, indicating that all fish have sufficient levels of Se to meet daily requirements without exceeding the UL. Hg level was below the maximum residual limit (MRL) of 0.5 mg/kg for most fish but it was 1 mg/kg in E. affinis and Lethrinus lentjan. The target hazard quotient (THQ < 1) and hazard index (HI < 1) imply that the consumption of fish poses no noncarcinogenic health risks. However, all examined fish had a mean Se/Hg molar ratio > 1, indicating that human intake of fishwas rather safe relative to Hg content. Health benefit indexes (Se-HBV and HBVse) with high positive values in all fish supported the protective effect of Se against Hg toxicity, suggesting the overall safety of fish consumption. The high Se/Hg ratio in fish could be attributed to the replacement of Se bound to Hg, thereby suppressing Hg toxicity and maintaining normal selenoprotein synthesis. This insight is useful for a better understanding of food safety analysis.

Improved crop genotypes are constantly introduced. However, information on their nutritional quality is generally limited. The present study reports the proximate composition and the concentration and relative bioavailability of minerals of improved finger millets of different genotypes. Grains of finger millet genotypes (n = 15) grown in research station during 2019 and 2020 in Ethiopia, and replicated three times in a randomized complete block design, were analysed for proximate composition, mineral concentration (iron, zinc, calcium, selenium), and antinutritional factors (phytate, tannin and oxalate). Moreover, the antinutritional factors to mineral molar ratio method was used to estimate mineral bioavailability. The result shows a significant genotypic variation in protein, fat and fibre level, ranging from 10% to 14.6%, 1.0 to 3.8%, and 1.4 to 4.6%, respectively. Similarly, different finger millets genotypes had significantly different mineral concentrations ranging from 3762 ± 332 to 5893 ± 353 mg kg-1 for Ca, 19.9 ± 1.6 to 26.2 ± 2.7 mg kg-1 for Zn, 36.3 ± 4.6 to 52.9 ± 9.1 mg kg-1 for Fe and 36.6 ± 11 to 60.9 ± 22 µg kg-1 for Se. Phytate (308-360 µg g-1), tannin (0.15-0.51 mg g-1) and oxalate (1.26-4.41 mg g-1) concentrations were also influenced by genotype. Antinutritional factors to minerals molar ratio were also significantly different by genotypes but were below the threshold for low mineral bioavailability. Genotype significantly influenced mineral and antinutritional concentrations of finger millet grains. In addition, all finger millet genotypes possess good mineral bioavailability. Especially, the high Ca concentration in finger millet, compared to in other cereals, could play a vital role to combating Ca deficiency. The result suggests the different finger millet genotypes possess good nutrient content and may contribute to the nutrition security of the local people.

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans and animals and is a powerful antioxidant that can promote reproductive and immune functions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplemental dietary selenium-enriched yeast (SeY) on egg quality, gut morphology and microflora in laying hens. In total, 100 HY-Line Brown laying hens (45-week old) were randomly allocated to two groups with 10 replicates and fed either a basal diet (without Se supplementation) or a basal diet containing 0.2 mg/kg Se in the form of SeY for 8 weeks. The Se supplementation did not have a significant effect on egg quality and intestinal morphology of laying hens. Based on the 16S rRNA sequencing, SeY dietary supplementation effectively modulated the cecal microbiota structure. An alpha diversity analysis demonstrated that birds fed 100 mg/kg SeY had a higher cecal bacterial diversity. SeY dietary addition elevated Erysipelotrichia (class), Lachnospiraceae (family), Erysipelotrichaceae (family) and Ruminococcus_torques_group (genus; p < .05). Analysis of microbial community-level phenotypes revealed that SeY supplementation decreased the microorganism abundance of facultatively anaerobic and potentially pathogenic phenotypes. Overall, SeY supplementation cannot significantly improve intestinal morphology; however, it modulated the composition of cecal microbiota toward a healthier gut.

Mountaintop removal coal mining leaves a legacy of disturbed landscapes and abandoned infrastructure with clear impacts on water resources; however, the intensity and persistence of this water pollution remains poorly characterized. Here we examined the downstream impacts of over a century of coal mining in the Crowsnest Pass (Alberta, Canada). Water samples were collected downstream of two historical coal mines: Tent Mountain and Grassy Mountain. Tent Mountain hosts a partially reclaimed surface mine that closed in 1983. Selenium concentrations downstream of Tent Mountain reached 185 µg/L in a lake below the mine spoil pile, and up to 23 µg/L in Crowsnest Creek, which drains the lake and the mine property. Further downstream, a well-dated sediment core from Crowsnest Lake records increases in sediment, selenium, lead, carbon, nitrogen, and polycyclic aromatic compounds that closely tracked the history of mining at Tent Mountain. In contrast, episodic discharge of mine water from abandoned underground adits at Grassy Mountain drive periodic (but short-term) increases in iron, various metals, and suspended sediment. These results underscore the lasting downstream impacts of abandoned and even reclaimed coal mines.

This study delves into the pollution status, assesses the effects of Se on Cd biogeochemical pathways, and explores their interactions in nutrient-rich paddy soil-rice ecosystems through 500 soil-rice samples in Pakistan. The results showed that 99.6 % and 12.8 % of soil samples exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) allowable Se and Cd levels (7 and 0.35 mg/kg). In comparison, 23 % and 6 % of the grain samples exceeded WHO's allowable Se and Cd levels (0.3 and 0.2 mg/kg), respectively. Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model results further revealed spatial nonstationarity, confirming diverse associations between dependent variables (Se and Cd in rice grain) and independent variables from paddy soil and plant tissues (root and shoot), such as Soil Organic Matter (SOM), pH, Se, and Cd concentrations. High Se:Cd molar ratios (>1) and a negative correlation (r = -0.16, p < 0.01) between the Cd translocation factor (Cd in rice grain/Cd in root) and Se in roots suggest that increased root Se levels inhibit the transfer of Cd from roots to grains. The inverse correlation between Se and Cd in paddy grains was further characterized as Se deficiency, no risk, high Cd risk, Se risk, Cd risk, and Se-Cd co-exposure risk. There was no apparent risk for human co-consumption in 42.6 % of grain samples with moderate Se and low Cd. The remaining categories indicate differing degrees of risk. In the study area, 31 % and 20 % of grain samples with low Se and Cd indicate Se deficiency and risk, respectively. High Se and low Cd levels in rice samples suggest a potential hazard for severe Se exposure due to frequent rice consumption. This study not only systematically evaluates the pollution status of paddy-soil systems in Pakistan but also provides a reference to thoroughly contemplate the development of a scientific approach for evaluating human risks and the potential dangers associated with paddy soils and rice, specifically in regions characterized by low Se and low Cd concentrations, as well as those with moderate Se and high Cd concentrations. SYNOPSIS: This study is significant for understanding the effects of Se on Cd geochemical cycles and their interactions in paddy soil systems in Pakistan.

The ability of brassicas to accumulate selenium is crucial for their positive effects on health. Selenium improves the immune system and the antioxidant defenses. Selenium biofortification of brassicas has therefore been explored to increase dietary selenium intake in humans. However, the effects of selenium biofortification on bioactive compounds, mainly phenolic compounds, are not clear. So, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to answer the question 'What are effects of the biofortification of brassicas with selenium on total phenolic compounds?' Ten studies, which assessed the effect of selenium biofortification on total phenolic compounds, were selected for qualitative synthesis and four studies were included in the meta-analysis after a thorough literature review of the PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Knowledge databases. The quality of the evidence ranged from high to moderate. The meta-analysis results indicated that the total phenolic compound content was significantly higher (P = 0.002) in the supplemented group but the results showed considerable heterogeneity (P < 0.00001, I2 = 97%) between studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes the effect of Se biofortification on the increase in the content of total phenolic compounds and it suggests that several factors can affect this relationship. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Selenium (Se) is an essential element for human and animal health and has antioxidant, anticancer, and antiviral effects. However, more than 100 million people in China do not have enough Se in their diets, resulting in a state of low Se in the human body. Since the absorption of Se by crop seeds depends not only on the Se content in soil, there are many omissions and misjudgments in the division of Se-rich producing areas. Soil pH, total iron oxide content (TFe2O3), soil organic matter (SOM), and P and S contents were the main factors affecting Se migration and transformation in the soil-rice system. In this study, we compared the performance of the back propagation neural network (BP network) and multiple linear regression (MLR) using 177 pairs of soil-rice samples. Our results showed that the BP network had higher accuracy than MLR. The accuracy and precision of the prediction data met the requirements, and the prediction data were reliable. Based on the Se data of surface paddy fields, 26,900 ha of Se-rich rice planting area was planned using this model, accounting for 77% of the paddy field area. In the planned Se-rich area for rice, the proportion of soil Se content greater than 0.4 mg·kg-1 was only 5.29%. Our research is of great significance for the development of Se-rich lands.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning models have promising applications in capturing the complex relationship between mixtures of exposures and outcomes. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed at introducing an explainable machine learning (EML) model to assess the association between metal mixtures with potentially opposing renal effects and renal function in middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: This study extracted data from two cycle years of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants aged 45 years or older with complete data on six metals (lead, cadmium, manganese, mercury, and selenium) and related covariates were enrolled. The EML model was developed by the optimized machine learning model together with Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to assess the chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk with metal mixtures. The results from EML were further compared in detail with multiple logistic regression (MLR) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). RESULTS: After adjusting for included covariates, MLR pointed out the lead and arsenic were generally positively associated with CKD, but manganese had a negative association. In the BKMR analysis, each metal was found to have a non-linear association with the risk of CKD, and interactions can exist between metals, especially for arsenic and lead. The EML ranked the feature importance: lead, manganese, arsenic and selenium were close behind in importance after gender, age or BMI for participants with CKD. Strong interactions between mercury and lead, manganese and cadmium and arsenic and manganese were identified by partial dependence plot (PDP) of SHAP and bivariate exposure-response effect plots of BKMR. The EML model determined the "trigger point" at which the risk of CKD abruptly changed. CONCLUSION: Co-exposure to metals with different nephrotoxicity could have different joint association with renal function, and EML can be a powerful method for studying complex exposure mixtures.

The paper presents a new analytical procedure for the determination and speciation of trace and ultratrace selenium in water, beverages, seafood, milk, and vegetables. The developed method is based on the dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with the use of new thiosemicarbazide-incorporated graphene as a solid sorbent, in combination of the total-reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF). As a result, we have created an auspicious analytical tool for fast and sensitive analysis of samples with a complex matrix. Regardless of the specimen type, the method is characterized by a very low detection limit of 1.7 pg mL-1 and high precision. The developed strategy allowed us to solve common problems associated with selenium loss during the sample preparation for the TXRF measurement and also improve its performance toward the analysis of beverages and high saline/solid samples, which may even be impossible to perform using standard sample preparation procedures for a TXRF measurement.

BACKGROUND: The search for alternative protein sources has increased the consumption and commercialization of plant-based beverages (PBBs). This study aimed to determine the total Se content, estimate the bioaccessibility of selenium (Se) in commercial PBBs derived from different raw materials, and evaluate their contribution to the reference daily intake (RDI). METHODS: An ultrasound assisted acid digestion method and ICP-MS was used to determine Se, and the INFOGEST method to estimate the bioaccessible percentages. Validation of this method was also performed, and the parameters obtained were: LOD and LOQ were 2.1 and 4.0 µg/kg, respectively. For accuracy, recovery percentages ranged from 99 % and 111 % (certified reference materials), and 95 % and 101 % (spiked experiments for bioaccessible extracts as recoveries). RESULTS: The PBBs presented total Se content between 4 and 226 µg/kg. Bioaccessible percentages ranged from 63.5 % (mix of plant sources) to 95.9 % (produced with organic cashew nuts). Only one cashew nut PBBs supplied the daily demand of Se, representing 64.6 %, 75.3 % and 82.2 % of the RDI; for lactating and pregnant women, children (≥ 4 years) and adults, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The Se determination method through acid digestion assisted by ultrasound and ICP-MS was considered adequate for the PBBs samples. Se content varied according to the raw material used in sample preparation. High percentages (> 60 %) of bioaccessibility were observed and only one PBBs derived from organic cashew nuts supplied the recommended Se demand for different groups of individuals.
